    Civil Society Groups and Elders Meet in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (Cunaabi) Civil society activist have meet in Mogadishu to discuss the current situation in Somalia.

The participants identified drought and violence as the main challenges facing the country at the mioment. They urged the Somali people to help each other at this difficult time. The civil society representatives also urged humanitarian organizations to help the drought victims.

On political matters, the activists condemned the recent transition period extension by parliament and urged the law makers to respect the will of the people. The civil society leaders explained that the Somali people should have the final word on matters of national governance.

The parliament was urged to withdraw it’s decision to extend the transition period and consult the Somali people and other stakeholders.

On security matters, the civil society representatives urged the groups engaged in the violent confrontations to respect the international humanitarian laws pertaining wars. They also proposed that a permanent solution to the endless clashes be prepared.

Various leaders and activists in the civil society groups including Abdikadir Ga’al Abkow and Asho Warsame spoke during the meeting.
